Vacuum Cleaner Review The
Sanitaire Commercial SC689-A is a well-built upright machine manufactured
for hotels, restaurants and offices. Its 5.0 amp motor and E-Z Kleen dust
cup make this unit a heavy duty vacuum capable of handling areas that see a
lot of traffic. It is strictly an old school design, but for $200-250
dollars it is a solid choice.
This vacuum is a nice looking unit for
public areas. The handle is made of chrome steel and the dirt cup or
alternative cloth bag is black and white. The base is black with a
protective bumper made of thick red vinyl. The white 3-wire grounded cord
is a nice length at 30 feet. The overall look is tidy and neat, making it a
machine that looks good while it gets the job done.
The Sanitaire Commercial SC689-A is a
machine that has some very traditional features but can be accessorized to
fit individual needs. From the chrome steel handle to the heavier weight of
the overall machine (15lbs), everything feels as though it was built for
durability. The unit can be accessorized with either a dirt cup or a filter
bag model. The dirt cup is paper bagless and is great for normally non
dusty environments. This is a great option because no paper bags are
required as the dust cup is simply emptied. The filter bag model is good
for environments where air quality is a concern and has a double zipper
system on the cloth bag for easy accessibility.
This heavy duty machine has a motor that
is easily accessed through the plastic cover on the front of the base and
parts are easy to find. The durable brush roller has easy to replace
bearings and is easy to remove for cleaning. There is an aluminum plate
that covers the bottom of the machine, but there is not a separate enclosure
for the belt. This can lead to a problem with needing to replace the belt
more often because sharp debris like staples can cut the rubber belt as it
passes through the bottom of the unit.
While the Sanitaire Commercial SC689-A
is a spiffy looking machine, one of the drawbacks is the sound (78 decibels)
the unit produces when it is running. For a commercial grade vacuum, the
motor leans to the smaller side of heavy duty at 5.0 amps. One other
complaint is that the cord wind up clips are not very durable and have a
tendency to snap off.
Overall, the Sanitaire Commercial
SC689-A is a great value for the price. The motor is durable and the unit
is solid. Extra features that are redeeming include the 6 settings for
carpet height adjustment— the industry standard is 4 settings. The handle
adjustment has 3 settings. Other pluses are the easy to reach on and off
switch located on the handle and the fact that this vacuum is easy to
assemble.
