Hi. I I have a Kenwood Canister type Vacuum Cleaner. It has only been used twice. The third time I tried to use it, it started to surge up and down, creating an Ozone type smell. I think there may have been blue sparks too. It got worse when I used the variable power slider up and down. I would like to effect repair on it myself, but can find no articles online.

Does anybody know what the problem might be? The motor is rated at 1600 watts AC.

Koblenz U-800 Vacuum Cleaner Reviews

Koblenz is not a very well known vacuum cleaner manufacturer in the United States, but worldwide the word Koblenz in synonymous with quality vacuum cleaners. Koblenz first production line vacuum cleaner was introduced in the 1960’s. With over forty years experience in the vacuum cleaner market Koblenz now produces some of the best vacuum cleaners available at an unbeatable price. The Koblenz U-800 vacuum cleaner is an excellent piece of machinery engineered on a great foundation. The Koblenz U-800 vacuum cleaner is commercial in nature, but residential in price. In the today’s vacuum cleaner market it’s tough to find a vacuum cleaner with so many positive aspects for under three hundred dollars.

The U-800 has a modern appearance and is composed of ABS plastics. The refuse tank is rectangular in design with a large, easy to use carrying handle situated on the front, top edge of the vacuum cleaner. Even at nineteen pounds the handle makes lifting and carrying the vacuum cleaner easy. The handle is composed of chrome metal making it stronger than other brands such as Hoover. The handle is easy to grip, but is not enclosed like some of the high end commercial vacuum cleaners. The cord hooks are made from metal making them durable and rigid. The back of the refuse tank has recessed slots where tools can be neatly stored out of the way while the unit is in use. The slots securely fasten the tools even when bumped or hit. The intake suction hose connects with the refuse tank near the top of the vacuum cleaner and is designed with a suction carburetor. Carburetors are not common on many vacuum cleaners currently sold, but are nice when vacuuming lightweight rugs and delicate upholstery. With this carburetor system the amount of suction can be adjusted so that fabrics won’t rip and matting won’t get sucked along when vacuuming.

The Koblenz U-800 vacuum cleaner comes standard with three vacuum tools and telescopic wand. The three standard tools are comprised of a crevice tool, upholstery tool and dust brush. The telescopic wand extends to three times its original length and is great for vacuuming high areas, baseboards, and corners. To use the onboard vacuum attachments, the suction hose pulls away from the base and attaches to the telescopic wand. Overall the user has about 9 feet of reach with this system making any vacuuming job a breeze. Utilization of the carburetor system with the upholstery tool makes cleaning items such as drapes and delicate fabrics an easy task.

The base of the unit is built to withstand scratching from rough surfaces such cement floors. The underside of the vacuum cleaner is covered with a protective metal plate that is easy to remove, exposing the brush roller, motor pulley and belt. To decrease the vacuum cleaners downtime the belt can easily be replaced in less than one minute. The U-800 contains a single ten amp motor with ample power for the vacuum system and the brush roller. The unit comes complete with a fifty foot bright yellow cord that breaks away from the unit. A heavy duty extension cord can be used to replace the OEM cord making repairs easy and affordable. The lower edges of the base are wrapped in rubber to prevent damage when vacuuming close to baseboards and maneuvering around obstacles.

The Koblenz unit overall is a great vacuum cleaner for the price point with only one minor dislike. The manufacturer could have better positioned the on and off switch, either on the handle or on the rear of the unit, instead of the top-front of the refuse tank. This unit was introduced by Koblenz line in December of 2008 and is sure to be a hit for all residential and commercial users in 2009.

Windsor Versamatic Vacuum Review

The Windsor Versamatic Upright Vacuum 2 motor model is available in both 14 inch and 18 inch widths. The 2 motors include a large 1000 watt vacuum motor that provides 105 cfm of suction and a separate motor for the brush roller. The large vacuum bag holds up to 5.3 liters of debris and the body is made from high impact ABS plastic which is extremely durable. In short, this is a vacuum designed for a lot of wear and tear.

The unit has a quiet sound level of 66 decibels, despite its two motors, and includes many features that make it a very handy machine for commercial applications. The long 40 foot power cord is nice for covering large areas without needing to replug the unit several times. The electronic controls include a worn brush strip light and the system tells the operator when the brush is not set low or high enough. In addition, there are clogged hose and full bag indicator lights. The bags are easy to replace on a clip on the inside of the unit and a flap on the filter bag covers the hole so that debris can not spill out while the bag is being replaced. Another nice feature is the one screw fastening feature of the brush strip, which makes replacement of the brushes a cinch. Various brush strips are available for different types of floors.

The Windsor Versamatic Upright Vacuum includes a Three Year Warranty on the vacuum motor, brush motor and belts. The belts are toothed so that they do not slip on the brush motor or the brush roller, reducing wear and tear over time. The electronic clutch stops the brush motor from turning when the brush gets caught up. If a blockage occurs the vacuum cleaner has a valve that is released so that the vacuum motor does not burn up. These additional features are often seen in machines known for their quality.

One feature that is appreciated on this model is the crevice tool clip which is an improvement over the NSS Pacer 214 UE, which only includes a Velcro attachment for the crevice tool. In addition, the top unit of the Windsor Versamatic Upright disconnects from the lower assembly to become a canister vacuum for hard to reach places.

Although the Windsor Versamatic Upright is an overall good choice, there are a few drawbacks. The handle can easily break away from the unit itself if the entire machine tips back and a few features are in awkward positions. One example of this is the power switch, which is located on the body of the vacuum and not on the handle, where it would be more easily reached. Another awkward placement is the height adjuster, which is located on the bottom of the unit. Sometimes the entire machine has to be turned over in order to adjust the height.

The only other drawback may be the fancy electronic controls, which can sometimes lead to more problems in the long term, but admittedly, the Versamatic line is known for producing a more quality type of machine that can be rebuilt and parts found more readily than some others available. In the end the Versamatic vacuum cleaner is a good choice for heavy duty applications.
